"So many people take computer technology for granted because it's such a major part of our society now, but imagine not having the education or access to computers. Low-income African-American and Latino children are at risk of being left behind and overlooked for jobs because they have not received the education and training like other ethnic groups. But, thanks to organizations that have a strong sense of responsibility, my Foundation can come into the community and provide the necessary training and education that kids may not be getting otherwise."

MISSION: The Magic Johnson Foundation’s Community Empowerment Centers provide ethnically diverse urban communities access to resources and programming that educate, empower and strengthen individuals though the innovative use of technology. In response to bridge the digital divide, in 2001 the Magic Johnson Foundation launched our first technology center in Los Angeles. The original intent of our program was to bridge the digital divide. Because of the disparity in the allocation of resources distributed to poor communities, especially as it pertains to schools, our mission has been expanded to utilize technology as a resource to offer a variety of educational programs that address the needs of the entire community. We have grown from technology centers to Community Empowerment Centers. We currently have 18 Community Empowerment Centers located in 15 urban markets and the rural market of South Carolina. Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Center grants are awarded to qualifying 501c3 organizations who have a grass roots following, have been in existence a minimum of 5 years (except SC) and whose mission and vision are consistent with those of MJF to promote technology and empower the underserved. Each applicant organization is required to complete an RFP for consideration as well as an MOU which defines the responsibilities of award recipient.
